Pretty Sammy Exposed

 

I  started watching Magical Project S and so many things made me uncomfortable as I watched. This will be discussed below and expanded upon. 

 

My first exposure to this show was watching the Pretty Sammy  Japanese Opening on youtube. You see the main character Sasami naked and pink flower petals and flowing around her.(pictured below)  I also noticed for ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS their uniform skirts were very short and that continues in the show. 

At some scenes in the series it focused on the characters legs as pictured above and I felt uncomfortable because these are kids, why are they sexualised?

In the Pretty Sammy  (Japanese) Opening other than nudity you see close ups of the MCs chest and a panty shot close to the end of the Opening.

There is a pan up of her legs to her holding the baton and her skirt is as SHORT AS SAILOR MOONS! This is a child. This wilk come up later in Magical Project S. 

I have only watched 4 episodes and I struggled through the show. I  really wanted to do a proper review but the sexualization of women was too much. We get  a guy commenting on Pretty Sammys miniskirt and the cameras constant focus on legs as well as sexualisation and aging up of Pixy Misa. 

These are kids, there is nothing attractive about a child.

There is a scene where a girl is in gym wear and the scene is trying to frame it as hot. One of the boys is a pervert and implies x character is attractive because of their physical attribites. Why is this character even here? To oggle the women in the show. 

The classmate is trying to imply with less clothes the teacher is more attractive than usual

This is not okay because this is a boy sexualising girls and women. He also does this to his homeroom teacher.

I noticed the focus on Pretty Sammy's miniskirt to show her legs in some scenes  and it is accentuated  by the camera frequently. 

In Sammy's transformation sequence, you see her nude before the clothes materalise on her body. 

Misao gets brainwashed by force after being cornered by the Rival to the godess character who is the queen of the magic land

Another observation I made as I watched the show was  was the sexualization of Pixy Misa. Evil is Sexy is a popular trope for the MG genre but despite Pixy looking older, that is still the body of an elentary girl BRAINWASHED AND HAS NO MEMORY OF WHO OR WHAT SHE DID. 

We have her outfit and in the first episode she is in a bikini sunbathing and get a legs first pan up before she decides to take a nap and send the monster for Pretty Sammy to fight.

The last point is how Sassami and this unknown girl want to be wives and moms as a life goal. This trope was prevalent in 90s - 2000s magical girl shows that the MC wants to be just that someones wife when that is not a sustainable life goal, as I explained in my Exposing Sailor Moon part 2 article that being a housewife was very common back then so the main leads must reflect traditional values. I am glad that trope  is slightly shifting in modern shows however it needs to be not as pushed like before. 

In reality being a SAHM is a divising topic in modern times  however many women have experienced being abandoned by their partners due tp illness , the husband switches  up after a baby/ marriage, financial abuse, emotional abuse, physical abuse, unpaid labour as well as the wife giving up her dreams to accomodate her husband. It is not a sustainable of realistic life goal to have especially as a young woman.

Overall my thoughts on this show is that  despite the animation being fluid and sometimes so exaggerated it is funny , I could not ignore the frequrent strange moments in the show because it is pedo bait made with the male gaze in mind.

Before I forget to add I disliked  the sister abusing her brother as a joke. This will never be funny or normalized.
